The town derives its name from the prominent 12.5-acre mound located in the southern portion of the city which is covered by wild flowers in the springtime. The site the founding settlers discovered in the 1840s is now a historical site and a cornerstone of the Town and still stands in Flower Mound, marked by an iron fence and a historical marker. The 'Flower Mound' is located on FM 3040 on the northeast corner and FM 2499 intersection, next to Tom Thumb.
The most widely accepted explanation for the mound is that it was a sacred ceremonial ground of Wichita Indians in the early 1800s. This area was part of the great American Black Land Prairie that ran from Canada to the Rio Grande and from the Rockies to the Mississippi. Though now surrounded by commercial and residential development, the mound is privately owned so as to be protected from further development.
